GlossaryPorus One (Renaltec / Spherical Carbon)

Porus One (Renaltec / Spherical Carbon)

Updated June 18, 2026

Porus One is a newer renal supplement designed to reduce the production of uremic toxins. In the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) cat, it targets a specific set of harmful chemicals that standard dialysis or fluids cannot easily remove.

The "Precursor" Trap (Indoxyl Sulfate) To understand Porus One, you have to understand where toxins come from.

  • The Source: When a cat eats protein, gut bacteria break it down into waste products (like Indole and Phenol).

  • The Conversion: These waste products are absorbed into the blood and travel to the liver, where they are turned into uremic toxins like Indoxyl Sulfate and p-Cresyl Sulfate.

  • The Damage: These specific toxins are notorious for accelerating kidney scarring and causing the "feeling rotton" sensation of uremia.

  • The Trap: Porus One sits in the gut and captures the precursors (Indole and Phenol) before they can be absorbed. They are trapped inside the carbon spheres and pooped out. If the precursors never enter the blood, the liver cannot make the toxins.

Engineering vs. Activated Charcoal It is critical not to confuse this with the activated charcoal found in emergency kits.

  • The Shape: Activated charcoal consists of jagged, sharp particles that can irritate the gut lining with long-term use. Porus One consists of perfectly smooth, round spheres that flow gently through the digestive tract.

  • The Pores: Regular charcoal absorbs everything, including vitamins and nutrients. Porus One is engineered with specific "nanopores" sized to trap only the tiny molecules of toxin precursors, allowing larger molecules (like proteins, vitamins, and cells) to pass through safely.

Administration: The "Flavorless" Advantage

  • Palatability: It is a fine, black powder that is completely tasteless and odorless.

  • Compliance: Unlike many supplements that cats detect and reject, Porus One adheres to wet food without changing the taste. Most cats eat it without noticing.

The "2-Hour" Rule (Interactions) Even though it is engineered to be selective, it is still an adsorbent.

  • Precaution: There is a theoretical risk that it could bind to oral medications. To be safe, it should be administered 2 hours apart from critical oral medications (like blood pressure meds or antibiotics).

  • Phosphate Binders: It does not bind phosphorus. It can be used alongside phosphate binders, but they target two different enemies (toxins vs. minerals).
