Hypotension Hypotension is defined as abnormally low blood pressure (typically systolic BP < 90 mmHg) and is considered a medical emergency in the CKD patient. While high blood pressure is a chronic threat, hypotension is an acute crisis often caused by severe dehydration, hypovolemia (low blood volume), or heart failure. The kidneys are exquisitely sensitive to pressure; they require a specific minimum pressure to filter blood. When pressure drops below this threshold, the kidneys are starved of oxygen (ischemia). This lack of blood flow rapidly accelerates kidney cell death and is a primary trigger for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Clinically, a hypotensive cat may exhibit profound lethargy, cold extremities, and pale gums.
